"Living in the New Normal" PD Provided by Iowa National Guard
If you have been following the news, you know Iowa had 3,000 Service Members return from a year-long tour to Afghanistan this past summer. This was the single largest deployment Iowa has experienced since WWII. Additionally, there have been many other units deploy and return from deployment over the last year...as well as others still preparing to deploy. Due to all of this, many children, and their families, throughout the state have been facing various challenges associated with military life. As a result, educators and community members are playing an even greater role in the lives of these children.
The Iowa National Guard Youth and Teen Program is happy to offer a two-day training for educators titled, " Living in the New Normal...Helping Children Thrive in Good and Challenging Times." This training is conducted by the Military Child Education Coalition and provides those working with military children a wealth of information (those attending leave with a tote bag filled with resources and materials). All materials, the training, as well as breakfast and lunch both days are provided at no cost to the attendee. Participants have the opportunity to earn educational credits in the form of 1.2 CEU's for $25.00 or 1 hour of graduate credit from Texas A&M- Central Texas for $175.00, payable following the training. Heartland AEA will also offer teacher licensure renewal credit for completing this training.
The training will take place on March 21-22, 2012 at the Iowa Gold Star Museum on Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa (located at 7105 NW 70th Avenue, Johnston, IA 50131). You can register online by visiting:

Last Chance to Save Big on Microsoft Products!
For several years the Iowa Educators Consortium (IEC), in partnership with Microsoft and JourneyEd, has provided teachers, students, faculty and staff with discounts on Microsoft Office and Windows software for home use. (Example: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, retail $499, IEC price $89.95). These discounts have been significantly less than what you’d find in retail stores.
The IEC has recently been notified that Microsoft will be discontinuing this program effective March 2012.
If you anticipate needing Microsoft software for your home/personal computer, order today to insure you get the best price possible. Orders can be placed online by going to www.JourneyEd.com/Select.
Please inform teachers, students, faculty and staff that they have a limited time to take advantage of these prices. Note: All students can request this pricing, so parents of kindergartners could even order at these prices.
JourneyEd will continue to provide education pricing on many other software titles and computer products; however, we do not anticipate that pricing on Microsoft products will ever be this low again.

Online Course Gives An Introduction to Google Apps
An essential component of the 21st century classroom is the use of digital technology. Digital tools not only provide the productivity means to accomplish tasks like previous software, but they create an environment for collaboration, sharing of learning, ongoing peer- and self-assessment and formative guidance and feedback from instructors. Iowa's AEAs have entered a partnership to make Google Apps (a highly powerful and robust suite of digital tools) accessible for Iowa's teachers. This course examines how to use Google Apps in the 21st century classroom as digital tools enhancing collaboration, creativity, and improved student communication.

Summer Workshop Allows Teachers an In-Dept Look at the Life of Lincoln
The following message was sent to us by a 3rd grade teacher from the Applington-Parkersburg CSD in the AEA 267 region.
This is a great opportunity for any K-12 educator to spend a week learning from some of the world's foremost experts on Abraham Lincoln.
How about visits to the incredible Abraham Lincoln Museum and private tours of the Old Capitol, Lincoln's Home, and New Salem?
Or perhaps you will prefer the private tour into the Lincoln vault of precious memorabilia under the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Let the well-organized fellowship take care of you, while you get a new look at our 16th president.
The cost? NOTHING!
Your airfare, hotel, and most meals are all included in the award.
Anyone can win! Apply by being creative with an Abraham Lincoln photo! Also, there is no pressure to join Horace Mann Insurance; they simply sponsor the program with headquarters in Springfield.
For me, this was the most professional learning experience I have had in my teaching career.
Visit the link and apply by February 12, 2012. Good luck!

Ed. Department Seeks Students for New State Advisory Council
Iowa students are invited to apply for a seat on a new state advisory council formed by Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass.
The Learning Council, which will be made up of 15 students, complements efforts by the Branstad-Reynolds administration and Director Glass to get input from various stakeholders across the state on transforming Iowa’s education system. The administration will release a comprehensive education package on Friday that focuses on three key areas: highly effective educators, high expectations for all students with fair measures for results, and innovation that boosts learning.
“Students deserve a seat at the table in discussions about the future of their schools,” Glass said. “I look forward to hearing their input and ideas.”
Students enrolled in grades 8-12 from public and nonpublic schools in Iowa may apply. Meetings will take place in March, May, September and December. Council members also will communicate via e-mail.
Applications can be found here and must be returned by January 31. Students who are chosen to serve on the council will be notified by February 10.

Iowa KidsNet: Explore Foster Care and Adoption
Please distribute this information as you see fit.
Imagine you are ten years old, and one day you are told you are going to live with a foster family you have never met. You may have to change schools and be separated from your friends. If a family isn’t available to take both you and your siblings, you might be sent to live miles apart. You probably feel confused and even scared.
In December of 2010, over 6,300 Iowa children were in foster care. Children enter foster care through no fault of their own, but often because of circumstances of abuse or neglect. A foster family provides a temporary safe, structured and loving home until a child can either be reunified safely with his or her birth family or find a new permanent home through adoption. Unfortunately, each year many teens turn 18 and age out of foster care without having a connection to a permanent family.
Iowa KidsNet is a statewide collaboration of agencies that recruit, train, license and support Iowa families to foster and adopt Iowa children. Iowa has a great support system for foster and adoptive families, as well as ongoing training and peer support.
In the Des Moines region, Polk County has the most urgent need for more foster families, particularly for African American and Latino foster families. Having a foster or adoptive family who shares a child’s ethnic or cultural background can be an important asset for children who have been removed from their home.
Families who can foster teens, sibling groups and children with special needs or behaviors are also needed.
There is no typical model for a foster family - people from all walks of life are needed. If you have a heart for children, enjoy teamwork and also have patience, flexibility, stability and a sense of humor, you could be a great foster parent.
There are many ways to get involved! Find out how you can make a difference and explore foster care and adoption at www.iowakidsnet.com. You can also join Iowa KidsNet on Facebook at www.FB.com/IowaKidsNet, follow them on Twitter at @IowaKidsNet or visit their blog at www.potentialforgreatness.blogspot.com.
