Great Online Resources for Digital Citizenship and More From AEA PD Online
Teacher Training Center
There are staff trainings in AEA PD Online’s Teacher Training center that many districts have used to support teacher learning for their PLCs, to blend district professional development or to allow staff to have more of a self-paced, self-learning professional development. Many districts are having their teachers take the Digital Citizenship self-paced trainings and then their students are taking similar content in the Student Personalized Learning system.

Online Trainings available through AEA PD Online
AEA PD Online staff are busy adding content to the online training system. Several trainings have been added this spring and a few more will be available in the next couple weeks. The trainings can be found at https://training.aeapdonline.org/.

Bullying Prevention
Audience: This course is intended for all school employees.
Description: This training identifies what constitutes student bullying, what are some of the warning signs, and how to prevent or respond to bullying. The intended audience is all educators who work in proximity of students, including teachers, paraeducators, and other support staff.
Digital Publishing for the Classroom - Mac
Audience: Inservice PreK-12 teachers and AEA course developers
Description: With the advent of mobile technology, including tablets, the need for teachers to be develop their own e-curricular resources for mobile technology is higher than ever. This training introduces teachers to the legal ramifications of creating e-curriculum for mobile devices, and shows teachers how to create e-curriculum using the .epub or .ibook format using a Mac computer.

Audience: This course is intended for all school employees.
Description: This course looks at what harassment in the workplace looks like, focusing specifically on both sexual harassment and workplace bullying. This training will help individuals identify, prevent, and respond appropriately to harassment.
Health Information Privacy (HIPAA) Compliance
Audience: The intended audience for this course is any educator, nurse or school employee who might come in contact with student health information or records.
Description: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was passed in 1996, and yet, many school employees do not understand how HIPAA applies to student health information that is maintained by schools. You may not know when, or if, student health records are exempt from HIPAA regulations, or what steps to take if HIPAA does apply to your school. This training will give you an overview of the law and a practical understanding of how that applies to your work.
TPACK - Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge Integration
Audience: Inservice PreK-12 teachers and AEA course developers
Description: Technology, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework to help understand the importance of aligning good technology integration with the curriculum and important student strategies. This course provides an overview of TPACK, including focus on developing lessons with a Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge focus.
Interviewing and Hiring Practices
Audience: District employees who are either hiring managers or participating in the interviewing and hiring process
Description: This training helps participants understand steps in the interviewing and hiring practice, as well as legal requirements regarding protected EEOC classes. It is intended for individuals involved in the hiring process who do not have specialization in human resources. This includes both hiring managers (e.g. building principals or supervisors looking to fill an opening) as well as interview committee members.
Part of this training will focus on aspects in the hiring process that might not directly relate to these individuals (that is, aspects that will be overseen by human resource specialists), but that serve as important background for their role.
Other trainings currently in development for this summer: FERPA, Cyberbullying and Online Safety, Ethics for Educators (updated for 2013), Level 1 Investigator, Instructional Coaching, Digital Publishing: Soft Chalk, Crisis Response: School Disasters, Crisis Response: Student Violence, Vision Screening and Media Relations.

Preparations for August 2013 Online Training System
This past August during the peak season of traffic to our online training system (http://training2.aea11.k12.ia.us), many users experienced a delay in website load time. In fact, a few days saw the average load time for a page at over 30 seconds. The reason for these delays was an unexpected 125% increase in the number of people taking online trainings. In order to make the make the user experience better, we have come up with a series of solutions and recommendations.
Our solutions for 2013
To solve the issue in August 2012, we instituted a “maximum concurrent users = 100” policy. Immediately doing so, the performance level improved to normal. For 2013 we will be keeping a concurrent user cap, but we will be raising it as we make some other changes.
The biggest change we are making is distributing the training system over many different servers. This should allow more processing power for our system. We are also looking at re-optimizing our server software to see if we can minimize the load an individual user has. We will be testing this new environment this winter with some pilot schools. We are confident that we will have a successfully working system next August.
Our recommendations for 2013
While these changes will help, with the additional trainings we will be adding, we could see numbers double again. Therefore, we have some suggestions for districts to make the experience better for their employees.
1. Encourage employees to take trainings earlier. If your district sends out a welcome-back to school letter in July to employees, encourage them then to take the trainings. July is a down time for usage of the server, so the chances of hitting that cap are very small.
2. If you are having staff complete the training in August, avoid the heavy usage dates. To the right, you can see our projected usage chart for next August, the darker the color, the heavier the usage.
3. Avoid having your entire staff take the training at once. While this practice might be very convenient for the planning of pre-service days, it also greatly enhances your chances of hitting the cap, meaning some will be logged into the site and some will not. Plus, all the individuals from your school accessing the same training could impact your own district bandwidth, slowing down the experience as well.
4. Target district inservice days. Waiting until your first early-out can save a lot of frustration for your teachers. Do take note that many districts use Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as an inservice day, and we see a spike of usage on that day as well.

Level 1 Investigator Training Correction
AEA PD Online received some questions about the initial message that was sent out about Level 1 Training. In last week’s Administrator Connection, it stated that the "board-appointed Level I Investigator and at least one alternate are to be posted with their phone numbers in every room of the building." This was text that had been sent out by Carol Greta in the past, and until this year, we had not heard back from school districts on the discrepancy.
However, in the blue book itself, it states:
102.5(3) Annually publish the names or positions and telephone numbers or other contact information of the designated investigator and alternate:
a. In the student handbook,
b. In a local newspaper of general circulation, and
c. Prominently post the same information in all buildings operated by the school authorities.
This is the information that is shared in the training itself. We will amend future informational emails/messages to change "every room of the building" to "every building."
However, in the blue book itself, it states:

Update on Level 1 Investigator Training
Iowa Code Section 280.17 requires all public and non-public schools to annually appoint a Level 1 investigator and alternate to investigate complaints regarding abuse of students by school employees and volunteers. The board-appointed Level 1 investigator and at least one alternate are to be posted with their phone numbers in *every building (see correction here). Investigators and alternates are to be trained upon initial appointment and once every five years thereafter. The training is to familiarize designated individuals with their roles, rules, procedures and required timelines for action.
The delivery of training for Level 1 Investigators is changing this year from the ICN to a self-paced activity online. This training will be available for participants on Monday, September 24. The training consists of videos, case study scenarios and online lessons to help meet the above objectives. Individuals will also have access to the necessary materials such as the Chapter 102 Level 1 Investigators Manual (Blue Book - Revised January 2011). After completing the course, you will be able to print off a certificate of completion.
There is no fee required to attend. To access the training, you must:
1. Go to http://moodlesw.aeapdonline.org/course/view.php?id=116 (this won't be available before September 24).
2. Login with your statewide Moodle username and password.
