Summary: The Computer Science Professional Development Grant can cover equipment that is needed to implement the curriculum you are seeking and teacher stipends. There is no "set" list of equipment but you can contact the approved vendors for suggestions. Below the Iowa Department of Education also added instructions if you have already submitted a CS PD grant and you want to update it.
In addition to the new maximum potential award of $50,000 (up from $30,000) and the removal of equal grade band distributions, as of Feb. 14, 2022, awarded funds may now be used for additional related expenses. Those expenses include any necessary equipment tied to the approved curriculum in the grant as well as stipends for teachers participating in professional development during non-contract hours and substitute pay when teachers participate in professional development during contract hours.
Please Note:
- There is not a "set" list of equipment purchases that will be approved, however, all approved vendors were provided an opportunity to supply items that would be associated with their offerings. Feel free to contact the vendor for questions.
- Stipends and substitute pay will follow that of the SCRIPT grants. Maximum sub pay amount is $150/day based on the school's regular rate. Maximum stipend amount is $20/hour or $160/day, based on the school's regular rate. Stipends are only allowed for off-contract work.
- If your district has already submitted a grant for the CS Professional Development funds, you may reach out to Justin Lewis, ask for it to be returned and then amend your grant for any additional funding for equipment, stipends and/or sub pay.

Iowa's AEAs are collaborating to write a CSPDIF grant application to help meet the needs of Iowa school districts. Many current (and future) computer science teachers are singletons in their building or district. Our intent is to provide educators with professional development opportunities they may not otherwise have access to in order to implement K-12 district plans for computer science instruction and provide quality computer science education. Together, we can support one another to deliver K-12 computer science to all students!
This website is the communication hub for the AEA Statewide Computer Science Professional Development Incentive Fund (CSPDIF). It includes information about each of the options we plan to include in our grant proposal.
The Statewide AEA Collaborative grant applications will include:
Elementary CSPDIF grant proposal
Secondary CSPDIF grant proposal
Next steps for district admins and computer science leaders:
1. Complete this survey by Jan. 31. The form only needs to be completed once per district. Your response will: provide us with the information needed to complete the grant application and implement the programs allow us to plan meaningful, K-12 computer science professional development allow you to express interest in participating in our grant applications.
2. Save your spot: Share this website and the program menu above with educators in your district so they can save their spot ASAP! Registration will only be open through Jan. 31 so we can have the most accurate numbers in our grant proposal. If you aren’t sure which teachers will be participating, have the building administrator complete this process.

The Computer Science Professional Development Incentive Fund application process is now open through Nov. 9 for districts, accredited nonpublic schools, and collaboratives. Funding is aimed at building the computer science teacher workforce by offering high-quality professional development to prepare Iowa teachers to teach computer science, engaging teachers who are new to computer science and encouraging innovation.
The incentive fund was created through 2017 legislation that encourages computer science in every school in Iowa, and is funded through a state appropriation as well as with dollars from a 2007 settlement of an Iowa class-action lawsuit filed against Microsoft Corp.
Applications for funding must demonstrate how schools will prepare K-12 educators to teach computer science and expand high-quality computer science instruction based on Iowa’s computer science standards adopted by the State Board of Education. The goal is for students to have a strong computer science foundation in elementary school, and then build upon it as they move through middle and high school.

The Department of Education is once again accepting applications for funding that Iowa schools and districts can use to build the computer science teacher workforce. The deadline for applications is May 20.
The incentive fund was created through 2017 legislation that encourages computer science in every school in Iowa. The fund is pending an appropriation from the Legislature.
The Computer Science Professional Development Incentive Fund will provide school districts, nonpublic schools and collaboratives of school systems to pay for professional learning or university coursework to build the capacity of educators to deliver high-quality computer science instruction at each grade level.
Applications for funding must demonstrate how schools will expand high-quality computer science instruction based on new computer science standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
