Year 2 Putting the Iowa Core Social Studies Standards Together sessions are being offered by Heartland AEA during the 2018-19 school year.
This two-day workshop will review and build upon Year 1 of the social studies standards professional development. Learning will focus on putting the standards together into coherent inquiry-based unit plans. Participants will learn about good unit design, how to unpack and bundle standards and build more in-depth knowledge on the use of compelling and supporting questions while creating coherence throughout a unit to implement the standards.

Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise announced he’s seeking input from Iowans on a draft of proposed statewide social studies standards for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Online survey is open through Jan. 9 and public forums will seek feedback on the draft standards. The online survey is available at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RLVQ52P. Iowans also can provide feedback at three public forums, either in person at three different sites across the state or remotely from satellite sites using video conferencing. The public forum sites and dates are located on the Department’s website.
Iowans are invited to apply to serve on a state team that will rewrite Iowa’s social studies standards for public review and possible adoption statewide. Any Iowan may apply to serve on the social studies standards writing team, but priority will be given to applicants who have a background in K-12 or higher education. Applications are due Dec. 11. To apply, visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VXWX6L7.
