There is an opportunity this summer for interested teachers to attend training on DIBELS Next (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) provided by Dr. Roland Good, one of the leading developers of DIBELS Next. Participants will dig deeper into learning about the DIBELS Next measures and how to make instructional decisions. The two-day session will be held June 27 and 28 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Des Moines (4300 Beaver Avenue).

Tuition Scholarships for Summer Global Education Course
With a three-day, two-credit summer institute sponsored by The Stanley Foundation and UI International Programs, plus a tuition scholarship which covers the cost, teachers will be ready to take on the world!
This year's all-new Global Education Summer Institute for Teachers at The University of Iowa will help teachers incorporate global learning into the classroom, regardless of discipline -- writing, science, social studies and everything in between -- to meet Iowa's Core Curriculum requirements.
The Institute is taught by University of Iowa Professor Greg Hamot with a variety of guest lecturers, including nationally-known Ohio State University professor of social studies and global education, Merry Merryfield.

2011 Real World Externships for Secondary Math Teachers
Iowa in the 21st Century must be a place where schools, businesses and universities work together to educate our citizenry in mathematics and science education. The Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) has a program for doing just that: externships for secondary teachers of mathematics and science.
The benefits to teachers include the chance to modernize the curriculum and build in real-world lessons, build relationships with in-town partners, inspire students into mathematics and science fields, enjoy doing something different in the summer and earn two graduate credits. Description
Project Title: Daily Raw Lumber Grade Mix Optimization Tool
Project Background: The Pella Lumber Plant is the manufacturing facility that processes all of Pella’s inbound Raw Lumber. The goal of the plant is to maximize the fiber recovery of inbound material while meeting all internal customer orders in a timely manner. The plant also attempts to do this with the lowest inbound material cost and lowest labor cost to achieve the highest profit margin.
Pella also purchases lumber from 10-15 sawmills. Each of these sawmills operates differently and has a different log they process; hence each supplier’s raw lumber will yield differently. Each grade of lumber processes at different speeds and outputs through the plant.
Project Scope: Develop a tool that the plant can use daily to determine the optimal grade mix of lumber by supplier to run to match a given set of orders at the lowest possible cost. This tool could be created in excel or with other software. The tool would likely have to use some type of Linear Programming or Goal Programming function. How the data we have collected is utilized would also have to be determined, but at this point we envision the need to use some type of regression analysis to get the most of the data and the tool. Although we have developed some possible constraints – we will have to add some more constraints to make it more realistic.
Six weeks, $150 per day = $4,500. Two graduate credits.

Educator Connection Newsletter Makes Its Debut
This week Heartland AEA sent out its first edition of a new newsletter called the Educator Connection. It was e-mailed to all educators in the Heartland area and is intended to keep our educators better connected to our agency and to the many programs and services we offer to educators, students and families. We plan to send another Educator Connection this academic year and in future send the newsletter four to five times a year. Click here for the newsletter.

Grant for New Teachers in Shortage Areas
The Teacher Career Establishment Grant helps new classroom teachers in state-designated subject shortage areas. Each recipient will be awarded up to $2,000 to help with the costs related to establishing a new career. Up to 62 grants will be awarded annually. Teacher Training for Online Financial Literacy Program for Students
The Iowa College Student Aid Commission (Iowa College Aid) would like to announce an exciting new online financial literacy platform that will complement current curriculum. Iowa College Aid has partnered with EverFi, Inc., the industry leader in web-based financial literacy programs, to bring financial education to every high school in Iowa. The Iowa Financial Literacy Program is the latest enhancement to the statewide community web portal, www.IHaveAPlanIowa.gov.
The EverFi program is an award-winning 3D learning platform that teaches students over 600 core concepts of financial literacy. The six-hour, performance-based course is both interactive and engaging to students and aligns with the Iowa Core. The program allows students to work at their own speed while teachers have the ability to track their progress on an individual basis. The curriculum, which is best suited for students in the 11th or 12th grade, is a great capstone for a comprehensive K-12 program in financial literacy as outlined in the essential concepts and skills in Iowa Core. Although participation is voluntary, we urge you to take full advantage of this resource in your school.

YouthBizCentral Online Entrepreneurship Curriculum
The University of Iowa’s Jacobson Institute has a stipend opportunity for Iowa High School teachers interested in piloting the YouthBizCentral Online Entrepreneurship Curriculum, which was developed through support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, Iowa.
Secondary educators participating in the pilot MUST be willing to implement the 8-unit curriculum, provide feedback via online surveys and have students take pre- and post- assessments measuring their attitudes about and knowledge of entrepreneurship. Each participating educator will receive a $250 stipend upon completion of the pilot project.
Curriculum features are the following:
· Online/Easily Accessible
· 8 Fully Customizable Core Units
· Lesson Plans
· PowerPoint Presentations
· Activities & Web Resources
· Entrepreneurial Profiles
· Student Business Planning Template
