Taking the Road Less Traveled (TRLT) is a one-day conference on the Iowa State University campus for middle school and high school girls to learn about STEM fields and how to infuse their passions within a career. TRLT gives students the opportunity to explore STEM through hands-on sessions, meeting female STEM undergraduates, and learning from STEM professionals. To top it off, students receive lunch, prizes and trivia!
The cost to attend TRLT is $15 per person (students and chaperones) and includes lunch. Students may bring extra money for a TRLT t-shirt ($15) or Iowa State souvenirs.

A graduate student and a few professors at Iowa State University have been working with the West Des Moines Historical Society to create an inquiry-based field trip for teachers to go on with their students to the Bennett School on Fuller Road in West Des Moines. The team from ISU wants to create something that teachers could get trained in so that they can go to the Bennett School when it is convenient for them and lead the inquiry-based lessons on their own since the school is not always staffed. They would like teacher feedback for this idea to know what educators need and how they could best use the resources. Please complete their Inquiry-based Survey by March 22.
Researchers at Iowa State University are conducting a study to evaluate the Well-Managed Schools (WMS) classroom management approach. WMS is a set of strategies that can be used by teachers during day-to-day classroom instruction, focusing on social skills and dealing with inappropriate behaviors. WMS can be implemented as a stand-alone approach or be integrated within a school-wide MTSS-B/PBIS model. The research is being funded by a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Studies.
The grant pays all costs for participating teachers, including training, follow-up coaching and stipends. Participating schools will also receive $50 per participating teacher each year of the study and reimbursement for substitute costs, if needed. Researchers are now contacting schools about participation for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, with the goal of adding 150 additional classrooms each year.
