Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has announced the STEM Education + Workplace Partnerships - Governor's 2019 Future Ready Iowa Summit on April 30. Leaders from business and industry, education, nonprofits, elected officials, students and others from across Iowa will come together at one event. The day is dedicated to Iowa’s future workforce in today’s classrooms, and the ways that employers and educators are working together to assure a strong talent pipeline tomorrow. Featured will be keynotes, panelists and presenters from rural and urban, businesses large and small, big city and small-town schools, and more, who are partnering to guarantee a strong employee pipeline. Gov. Reynolds will also announce the six recipients of Iowa STEM’s Computer Science is Elementary award during the event. Taking the Road Less Traveled (TRLT) is a one-day conference on the Iowa State University campus for middle school and high school girls to learn about STEM fields and how to infuse their passions within a career. TRLT gives students the opportunity to explore STEM through hands-on sessions, meeting female STEM undergraduates, and learning from STEM professionals. To top it off, students receive lunch, prizes and trivia!
The cost to attend TRLT is $15 per person (students and chaperones) and includes lunch. Students may bring extra money for a TRLT t-shirt ($15) or Iowa State souvenirs.

Nominations are now open for the 2018 I.O.W.A. STEM Teacher Award sponsored by Kemin Industries. The award, offered by the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council, celebrates teachers whose leadership and dedication to STEM in Iowa increases students’ interest and awareness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. One teacher from each of the six STEM regions will receive a $1,500 award along with an additional $1,500 to be used in their classroom. Deadline for nominations is Oct. 6, and recipients will be announced in Jan. 2018. The nomination process is simple and open to everyone, including fellow teachers, school administrators, students and parents. STEM educators in grades 4-8 are eligible to apply for a full scholarship to STEMcon Space Academy for Educators at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. STEMcon is an immersive, collaborative professional development workshop that provides educators with mission critical tools for engaging and exciting their students. This NASA grant-funded professional development program is located at the home of Space Camp and will be offered in two sessions, June 2-5 and July 8-11. The scholarship includes tuition, meals, lodging, lesson materials and a stipend to help offset travel expenses. What do designing robots, solar cars, aircrafts, wind turbines, creating with Legos, performing experiments on earth materials and diagnosing diseases have in common? Answer: They have the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focus of the educational curriculum/training available for FREE implementation by LEAs or after-school organizations!
Iowa has selected 12 STEM programs to coordinate with and to enhance your current curriculum. These programs are designed to increase students’ interest and achievement in STEM fields through a focus on students use of problem solving and creative, collaborative and critical thinking skills.
For this program, the applying organization can be an entire district, a single school, a grade-band, an individual classroom, a PTA, 4H or Girl Scout group or an after-school program. In order to implement one (or more) of these programs, schools/organizations apply to the Regional Hub. Click here for the Regional Hub Map. If the LEA/organization is awarded program implementation, all aspects of the program (including professional development and curricular materials) will be provided FREE to you and your school/organization. All funding will be coordinated between your Regional STEM manager and the program provider.

Benefits of the programs:
- There are different programs available for elementary, middle and high school students
- Many of the programs can be implemented during the school day and some are best suited for before or after-school programs
- The programs all provide either stipends for teachers/coaches or curriculum materials or both
- Many of the programs also provide a level of training related to the provided materials
It is an exciting time for math and science in Iowa. The application is relatively simple and can be found online at http://www.iowastem.gov/educators-stem-scale-application#overlay-context=node.
The application deadline is September 14, 2012. Those educators selected to receive programming will be notified by October 1, 2012 and can implement the programming immediately this fall.
